This chapter traces the evolution of the original glass branch of The English Glass Co. Ltd business, from simple glass mouldings from its incorporation in 1934, to a specialist and varied range by the end of the twentieth century. It includes an explanation of the term ‘fire polished’ rod mouldings and the production processes for all the glass products together with an indication of the diverse product ranges. Reference is also made to the unsuccessful attempt to manufacture glass marbles from a new tank furnace built in the Melton Mowbray branch factory.

The first identified provisional patent by The English Glass Co. Ltd. was filed in 1948 for the ‘Glo Stud’. One of the author’s first projects within weeks of commencing work with the firm was to research options and, if approved, develop and introduce a range of road reflective products to meet the need for the new motorways and other roads. As the UK road infrastructure increased in the 1950s and 1960s, the range of existing EGC glass road safety products was developed further and a separate product and sales division was formed.

This chapter explains how the company became involved in dispensing pumps as part of the company’s growth strategy, and the development of this almost separate business, together with markets, product evolution & applications etc.

CHAPTER 3_IIA FACTORED PRODUCTS

The company added complementary products from after WWII as a means for improving earnings and as a service to customers. From the 1960s the inclusion of factored products became an important part of the company’s growth strategy
